Starting a conversation

Ten Top Tips on How To Start a Conversation

For many singles, starting a conversation is done with lots of thought, procrastination and finally lament at another opportunity lost.

People fear rejection and being made fun of or just not knowing what to say. It can be easier not making contact at all or worse still, not going out.

1. Start Talking Anyway

What do you get when two people do nothing? ... NOTHING! Be the one to instigate a conversation and see where to from there.

2. Any Topic Will Do

For example – you’re on a peak hour train and it is packed out with working people making the commute home. A good topic would be what’s surrounds you. Without coming across as a whinging negative person, you can use the air-conditioning or lack-of as a conversation opener. Chat about anything that is around you and then move on from there.

3. Act Fast - count to 10 and then turn to someone and begin talking.

Delay and procrastination are the biggest conversation killers. Just do it!

4. Give Yourself a Contact Goal

If you’re chronically shy, give yourself a goal to talk to a certain number of people each day, week or month. Then do what it takes to fulfil that goal. Tell a friend, so you’re committed to taking action.

5. Go to events with a friend

One way to solve inaction is to go out with a friend. You still need to do the work, so have your friend prompt you to talk to new people. A good friend will help get you moving in the right direction.

6. Read newspapers, magazines and take in the world around you. This gives you something to talk about.

Introverts can live in a somewhat secluded world. If you allow this to happen, you can become a stranger in your own world. It’s good to get outside input and know what's going on. You can use this as fuel for your conversations. Keep up to date and you’ll find the conversation keeps flowing.

7. Join Clubs and Associations

Another way to keep meeting people is to join a club or organization where you'll meet people on a regular basis.

Don't just join ... be on a committee. If you're perceived as useful, others will contact you. Join a social club and get yourself on the committee. Plan to be in contact with people on a regular basis.

8. Dress Smartly - but not too smartly!

The way you dress says a lot about who you are … but:

- look too drab and people will avoid you

- look too smart and people will be intimidated by your snappy dressing and may avoid you.

- dress somewhere in between and look great, but approachable. Then people will feel like they can talk to you.

9. Always check your teeth, your breath, and make sure you don’t have any body odour.

10. Smile!

A big reason why singles miss out on meeting and dating others is the lack of a smile. This completely changes the way people respond to you. Find things that make you happy and let this shine through you in the form of a smile because people are drawn to those who smile.
